LIVERPOOL DEFENCE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

Liverpool have been the pacesetters this season with eight wins out of eight as the club appears to be in control of the title race. With 30 games remaining, it may seem hasty to proclaim Jurgen Klopp’s side as Champions elect but they certainly look like champions. The German has been able to construct a team that is relentless and capable of defeating different opponents.

He has been helped by an excellent transfer strategy which has seen the club attract top-quality talent not seen since the time of Benitez. The defence, in particular, has been amazing with a back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Virgil Van Dirk and Joel Matip.

This is perhaps the best cast since the era of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Risse and Arbeloa under Rafa Benitez at the beginning of the decade. The current backline is more stable and able to create chances as well as keep the opposition attack out.

Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Roberston had over 30 assists between them last season which is a testament to the level of deliveries from both players. Alexander-Arnold, in particular, is an excellent crosser and set-piece expert. The young defender continues to grow and is capable of becoming one of the best in his position.

Meanwhile, Robertson is perhaps the most complete left-back in the game capable of attacking and defending in equal proportion. The Scotland captain has become more influential in the team with reliable and consistent performances.

Van Dirk and Matip have formed one of the best partnerships in the center-back position. Both defenders are big men and this makes it difficult for most EPL forwards to bully them off the ball and Van Dirk’s pace bails him out in difficult situations. Adrian has also been an inspired transfer helping the club to move on from Alisson’s injury with little fuss.
