The Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has said that he feels that the Liverpool duo of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have the capability to become the next Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia. The former Liverpool player Sami Hyypia had an incredible partnership with the youth academy product Jamie Carragher many seasons ago. Even though the 35-year-old Jamie Carragher has been reduced to a bit part player in recent seasons due to his age, Pepe Reina believes that Liverpool have already found the replacement in the form of the Danish defender Daniel Agger and the Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel.
Martin Skrtel was signed by the former manager Rafa Benitez for around £ 6 million. He was recently subject to interest from the Premier league champions Manchester city, but he rejected the possibility of any speculation growing by signing a new deal with the club. The 27-year-old Daniel Agger is also regarded as one of the best players in the world, and he straightaway rejected speculation linking him with Manchester city in the summer. These players can become the backbone of the defence for the next five years according to the goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Daniel Agger was also offered a contract extension in the summer.
“It’s good they’ve signed contracts because it’s a fact that they are one of the best centre-back couples in the Premier League. The understanding between them is great and they’ve been really solid lately. In the last year and a half or so they have been brilliant for us. It’s great for the club and I’m happy for them that they’ve got new deals. If I am not mistaken they are similar ages to each other, so they have five or six years still to play their best football,” said the Liverpool goalkeeper on the official website of the club.
